Lockyer v. San Francisco and Lewis v. Alfaro
Lockyer v. San Francisco, S122923; Lewis v. Alfaro, S122865
These cases were a challenge to the legality of the some 4,000 same-sex "marriages" performed in San Francisco after the city's mayor, Gavin Newsom, ordered city officials to allow same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses. The California State Supreme Court found that Mayor Newsom had overstepped his authority by issuing the licenses despite California laws defining marriage as a union of a man and a woman. The Court also voided all of the same-sex "marriages" performed. See related news articles.
