But it will require an exercise of political will and muscle for the federal government to pass legislation that puts the country in the same league as the Netherlands and Belgium. ________________________________________________________ 2-NEWS: The battle is not over in Canada – family groups will fight for m By MICHAEL VALPY Pleasantly caught off guard by yesterday's Supreme Court decision, conservative church and family organizations suggested their task now is to persuade members of Parliament that the same-sex marriage issue is too complex for simple legislation. ________________________________________________________ 3-NEWS: Gay activists refuse to bargain away rights Gay activists refuse to bargain away rights Gay Activists Refuse to Bargain Away Rights Dozens Tell Lawmakers They're Against Any Plan to Pull Back From Fight for Equality By Evelyn Nieves Washington Post Staff Dozens of prominent advocates for gay rights sent a letter to every member of Congress yesterday stating that they would reject any plan to bargain for equal rights, and specifically decried a report that the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay political organization, was planning to "moderate" its positions and would possibly support President Bush's plan to create private Social Security accounts. ________________________________________________________ 4-NEWS: Interview w/ interim HRC director By Chad Graham An Advocate.com exclusive It’s been more than a week since boardmembers of the Human Rights Campaign asked for the resignation of executive director Cheryl Jacques. Sources have said there were concerns about her management style, but there is little doubt that all national gay rights groups are bruised in the wake of antigay marriage amendments passing in 11 states and the reelection of George W. Bush. ________________________________________________________ 5-OP-ED: C. Crain: CUs, DP should lead to ssm, not mess it up Chris Crain WashBlade Executive Editor HAVE YOU EVER stopped to consider whether there’s some merit to the oft-repeated conservative claim that our desire to wed threatens the very institution of marriage? Of course we all laugh at such claims because it seems preposterous to think that somehow gay couples marrying will weaken the matrimonial unions of heterosexual couples. Half of all heterosexual marriages end in divorce, but zero percent bite the dust because the gay couple down the street can finally tie the knot. ________________________________________________________ 6-OP-ED: B. McGrory: First cases of ss divorce show gays like straights B. McGrory: First cases of ss divorce show gays like straights BRIAN MCGRORY After love, inevitability By Brian McGrory Boston Globe Probably it was inevitable, but still, it seems kind of quick. Not six months into the era of gay marriage in Massachusetts, the first divorce filings by gay and lesbian couples have unceremoniously landed in local probate courts.
