Federal Defense of Marriage Act, September 1996

The 104th Congress Passed the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 (DOMA) in a bipartisan vote.  This act is widely considered the cornerstone of Federal marriage policy and as a bulwark against the legalization of same sex "marriage."
