The Netherlands extended registered partnership status to same-sex couples in 1998. Registered Partnership Act 1997

The lower chamber of the Dutch Parliament approved bills that would allow same-sex couples to "marry" and adopt children on September 12, 2000 and the upper chamber approved them on December 19, 2000 in separate votes (49-26 for the marriage bill and 47-28 for the adoption bill).
